As the U.S. sequester spending cuts kick in, Congress needs to take a closer look at how bloated immigration detention costs can be reduced, including through use of humane and cost-effective alternatives to replace unnecessary detention.
 
Immigration detention costs taxpayers $2 billion every year. Alternatives cost 30 cents to $14 per day per person, compared to $164 per day per person for detention.
