TELL SECRETARY TILLERSON THAT TORTURE, DETENTION AND KILLING DOESN’T BELONG ON A “PENDING” LIST.

Since early April, the world has become increasingly aware of a human rights crisis unfolding in Chechnya, Russia. More than 120 gay and bisexual men have been targeted for arrest, detention and torture by police - and there is no clear end in sight. Several people have died as a result of torture or at the hands of family members who themselves cannot tolerate LGBT people.

From Belfast to Buenos Aires activists have marched in the streets demanding an end to this tragedy. Heads of state such as French President Macron and German Chancellor Merkel have spoken out forcefully. And here in the United States, members of Congress have engaged in a bipartisan effort to raise the profile of this issue and to demand government action.

But when asked whether he has raised the brutal detention and murders of gay men in Chechnya with his Russian counterparts, Tillerson said it is still on his “pending list” of issues to discuss. Furthermore, he admitted that he did not know whether President Trump was aware of what was happening in Chechnya—an utter failure of leadership at a time when some of the most vulnerable are looking to the United States and its for support and assistance.

Stand with us and demand that Secretary Tillerson take immediate action to protect victims facing violence and persecution in Chechnya.
